Born and raised in Cheltenham, he trained as an economist and worked in business for a short time before beginning a thirty-five year career teaching at a local public school, where he was Head of Economics and Art History.
Martin is still based near Cheltenham with his wife Jenny. They love travelling in Europe to visit places of art-historical interest, particularly southern Germany, Austria and Italy. Venice is their favourite city to visit and it features in much of Martin’s work.
Painting began for Martin as he approached retirement. He has been inspired by many painters, in particular J.M.W. Turner, Edward Seago, Aubrey Phillips and John Palmer. He paints mainly in watercolour, often supplemented with ink and pastel.
