Jim Starr
BRITISH PAINTER AND PRINTMAKER
Using a mixture of original screen-printed material, his own photography, free-hand drawings and collected collage, Jim creates original and often complex hand-pulled prints, each one uniquely different. They can vary from five layers to forty and can take weeks or many months to execute. He prints on supports as diverse as denim, silk, surfboards and traditional paper, but Jim's bigger images are laid down onto canvas, often reworked and refined using acrylics and spray paint.

These works are an alluring suspension existing between the figurative and the abstract. They feature an unconstrained luxurious application of paint, relying upon drips and splatters and 'happy accidents'. The final image is a composite of abstract painting and photographic contortion. Each paint layer or print mark undergoes a process of destruction, addition and editing until the desired outcome is achieved.
Jim's love of travel and his insatiable appetite for incongruity flows through his images. East meets West, trash nestles with glitterati, good versus evil marries with everything in between.
He currently lives on Exmoor in North Devon where he works as a full-time artist. He studied at Chelsea London Institute and went on to complete a degree at Kingston University.
He boasts an impressive history of solo shows and group exhibitions in London, Paris, New York, Chicago, Palm Beach, Venice, Singapore, Tokyo, Ibiza and most recently with the prestigious Bvlgari in Rome.
His work can be found in private collections worldwide.
