The Old Guitarist
Etching and Aquatint, 1976-77
Suite: The Blue Guitar
Signed
Edition 106 of 200
Paper size: 34.5 × 42.5cm
£18,500 Framed
The Blue Guitar suite of twenty etchings was inspired by a poem by the American poet Wallace Stevens, who had drawn inspiration from Picasso's painting The Old Guitarist. It was printed in London and New York at the Petersburg Studios and published by Petersburg Press as both a print portfolio and a book. The images were created to accompany the book-length poem, each print being Hockney’s unique interpretation of the poem, rather than a literal illustration.
