Ashar

BRITISH PAINTER

Ashar works mainly in oils on wooden panel, creating abstract works with the aim of moving the viewer emotionally. She endeavours to capture a painterly response to the spirit of a landscape rather than simply a visual impression, thereby creating work that has the ability to be keenly felt.

Born in Surrey in 1942, Ashar now lives and works on the Somerset Levels. Since graduating with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Plymouth University, she has continually refined and challenged her practise.

The Levels are her great inspiration. The winter months are spent on the moors sketching and soaking up the essence of the landscape. She then uses these sketches to reconnect with her feelings for a place when working back in the studio.

The materials she uses and the methods employed are an important part of her practise, with a slow process of layering acting almost as a conversation with her tools. Ashar works mainly with oils but also other media such as oil pastel, graphite, metal leaf, crayon and ink pencils. Ashar is a member of the Royal West of England Academy and her work is held in collections all over the world.
