In his third collaboration with the National Gallery, Peter Layton has turned his attention to Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’, a welcome challenge to capture the essence of the painting in glass. This September, in celebration of his 80th year and this exciting new series, the Sunflowers Collection will be released in galleries across the UK and we're very proud to be one of them!
After extensive experimentation, Peter has translated qualities of the Dutch painter’s masterpiece to glass, floating his radiant sunflowers on a cool blue background and conjuring the landscape of Southern France. Launched at the National Gallery in May 2017, the series required nearly a year of development before Peter felt he wholly encapsulated his interpretation of the painting.
“I regard Van Gogh as one of the greatest painters of all time. Interpreting his ‘Sunflowers’ in glass has been both enormously challenging and extremely rewarding. I am delighted to release this new series with our partner galleries across the UK this September.” – Peter Layton
